The Good, The Bad, and The Real Life

In October, 2008, I found out my mother had stage 4 lung cancer. At the time I was just speechless. I'm not typically speechless. I just couldn't believe it. The sound of the "C" word just silenced me. My sister began crying, my step father gasped and the tears fell, my mother was crushed.....I was numb. No tears. No feelings. The doctor said, "with treatment she has 1 year to live...without it, about 6 months."

My mother began chemo in November, 2008. Her cancer was inoperable. It was incurable. that doesn't sound very good. I don't like it. She began chemo. It wasn't fun. It wasn't pretty.

The Good: But her body was responding. Thank God. She went through 2 rounds of chemo. Her body resoponded much better than we expected. Praise God. Her cancer slowed down.

The Bad: Mom has cancer in a totally different part of her body. You know, I was celebrating Mom's victory in one moment and fearing her next trial in the next. The newest cancer was in a totally different part of her body. And's malignent. Surgery is required.

The real is in a lot of pain. I'm thankful for all of the prayers being sent her way. I trust God in all of it. What else can you do?

I am overwhelmed by the love being shown by my friends. I must have the best friends ever. Thank you so much for loving me and my mom throughout our tough times. I love you!

Thank you so much for your prayers! It means the world to me! If you have any questions, let me know. Love you!

****Friends of Lysa visiting by way of her blog. Thank you so much for popping over here to pray for my mom. Your words are bringing good and much needed tears to my eyes. I love you for taking the time to comment and allowing God to use you in the lives of me and my momma! Have a blessed day!

Melissa, I want you to know that I am praying for you and your Mom. I Love your blog. You do an awesome job. The cancer journey is not easy. It is heart wrenching. When my Mom had cancer I remember asking, "Why my Mom? She still has so much to offer to this world. I need her, please God NO!!" Hold onto the promises that God has given us in the Bible. He will make a way where there seems to be no way. He will help all of you through this. When you look back on this time in your life, you will see that, YES, it was God that carried you through this storm. I found that if I kept my mind on "Good Things", that Satan couldn't get to me. I encourage you to read the book series "The Heavenly Daze". By Lori Copeland and Angela Hunt. They bring such insight about Heaven, guardian angles, warrior angels, the throne room. Perhaps it will bring peace to your Mom, letting her know what Heaven can be like and transport you away from your troubles ~ at least for a little while. They have done their research and make it clear how wonderful Heaven is. God bless you. Brenda

Dear Melissa,
I read your story on Lysa's blog. I am so sorry that your mother is going thru this trial. Please encourage her with truths of God's love for her, His past faithfulness to her and His promises for her. I like Lysa's idea of 3X5 cards. What a wonderful weapon to fight the fear that will naturally creep in.
As I was reading Num. 13-14 this week about the 12 spies that God sent into the promised land it struck me that although they all saw the same things, 10 focused on the obstacles and 2 focused on the opportunity. 10 saw things from their perspective and 2 from God's perspective. 10 looked thru eyes of unbelief and 2 thru eyes of faith.
Our God is a God that specializes in the impossible circumstances. He promises to walk us thru each trial to the promised land. May you and your mom FEEL God walking right beside you, and in times carrying you thru this difficult time. He loves you both so very much and will carry you thru!

Sweet Melissa, I pray for you, your mother and your family during this time of trial and pain. I would like to share a word that I received from a Beth Moore study a few years ago. It's never left me and has always strengthened me at times of struggle. It was the comparison of God's daily portion to the daily manna the Israelites received in the desert. The manna was new every morning. It was exactly the right amount for their daily needs. However, if they attempted to hoard for the next day and not seek it fresh each morning, it would not suffice. While he faithfully provided, they still were required to rise and collect it new each morning. Likewise, His portion for us is perfect each day. Our task is to have the strength to rise and seek Him and that portion every day. I will pray for that strength for you and your mother. Praying for His Portion! Much Sisterly Love,

Dear Melissa,
It doesn't really matter that we have never met. We hold the closest bond, sisters in the Lord. So I am writing to encourage you and to let you know that you are continually before the Father in Heaven. This struggle that your family is going through is not a surprise to God but it does cause Him to weep, when He sees His children suffer. Pain and death were never part of His perfect plan for us. But we can rejoice that Jesus has overcome death! That is God showing His great love for us! I have been where you are, both my parents are now in Heaven, BUT it was so hard for me in the letting go part. Please know that even though it seems like you won't be able to get through the day, God ALWAYS provides a way!!! Keep this picture in your mind that Jesus is seated at the right hand of the throne of grace daily living to intercede for you! Much love and ongoing prayer for you and your Mom and entire family.

Dear Melissa, my heart hurts for the pain that your mother and you are experiencing right now. It can be SO overwhelming with the emotions that wash over you in any given day as you see your mother fight this battle. When it seems so overwhelming, think of what Jesus said in John 16:33: "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

My husband watched his father fight stage 4 brain cancer last year and God's will was to bring him home to heaven. We clung to God's promise that He is with us in every turn of events, in every doctor appointment, in every doctor call, and in every difficult night.

Dear Heavenly Father, I lift Melissa to you right now and ask that You would allow her to experience and tangibly know Your peace. Please give her exactly what she needs today to be a support to her mother. Thank you for loving Melissa and her mother so much!

I'm a visual person, and uwhenever I've had people close to me going through cancer, or something just as painful, especially when it's something that I cannot control, which has happened to many times unfortunately - I picture God as my big daddy, and curling up in his lap like a little girl does, and let him make it all better, and tell me that He's in control. I don't know if it helps, and I know that you know all this, but hopefully the visual helps. I'm praying that you and your mom can curl up in His lap, let Him hug on and let Him whisper that He loves you, your lives are in His hands, and He's in control and you both can rest peacefully in that reassurance today.
God bless you both - hugs & prayers.

Hi Melissa,

I've visiting from Lysa's blog. As I was reading your post about your Momma, I kept hearing "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." Then I was singing it...praise God you don't have to endure that too - that just may be the tipping point.... Anyway, just remember that your help comes from the Lord! And, with God, tell me, is there anything impossible? NO, nothing is impossible with God.

Keep the faith,

My father died 7 years ago. Being near the youngest of 9 kids, I was not told how. He was 81; I was 39. You'd think I was old enough to think 'well, he had a good life' or some of those other platitudes we say when someone dies, but no, not me..I was numb. He died in Feb, so the snow made it unable to bury him, so we had his commital in then, I was not numb. Honey, whether your mom is a Christian or not (and I'm not sure if my father was), it is never ever a wrong time to cry...I still do on occasion. I have lots of 'I wish he could see this' or 'I would tell him that'. Know that whenever you cry, God will hear you.

I pray that you can all rest in the peace that we can only get from our Heavenly Father. One bit of advice...get all those conversations out of the way now that you know you are going to want to have. I felt I could wait a little bit to do that and he was gone in 4 weeks. I will be praying....God bless you!

I do not know you, but came here as a sister in Christ through Lysa's blog.I know how painful it is to hear the "C" since I am dealing with it in the lives of people I love right now. I found this beautiful plaque for my friend and I wanted to share those words with you: "These are the things Cancer cannot do. It cannot cripple love, it cannot shatter hope, it cannot corrode faith, it cannot kill friendship, it cannot destroy peace.”
I have read the many Bible verses left for you and i leave just a few more in the hope they will bring you comfort knowing the Lord will never forsake you.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Romans 8:26

In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry [did enter] into his ears. 2 Samuel 22:7

I will call upon the Lord, [who is worthy] to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, [even] into his ears.
Psalms 18:3-6

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Please know as I go through the day I will continually lift you and your family up to the Lord that he will hold you and comfort you through this.

Dear Sister in Christ,

I read your blog & the P31 devotion daily. What comfort and support they have been to me over the past 18 months. I don’t typically “blog” but today felt the Lord urging me to send you a message.
I lost my father to cancer in October of 2007 so I can only imagine what you are going though now. Words are never enough, but we are so blessed to have the knowledge and hope of a better life. A life that our Father has promised will be without pain and hurt. I’m praying for you, your mom and entire family.

Spend as much time together as you can, the memories will be so precious and comforting to you. Always remember how lucky we are to have our earthly parents.

May God’s blessings be with you today and always.

Dear Melissa,
I am praying for you and your family...
Lord in the powerful name of Jesus, I bind the enemy from the lives of Melissa and her family. I bind any spirit of fear and anxiety, and spirit of contention that would arise to try and split, hurt or plant lies in their lives.
I pray that you would come in behind and loose Your Spirit in their lives. Fill them with such peace that they are able to comfort each other, and that they are able to love on each other and Melissa's mom.
God you know what they need. Please touch them all the in the specific ways they need to feel Your love, and Your arms around them, holding them safe and fast in Your lap.
I thank you in advance for Your answer to these prayers, and all the prayers being raised on behalf of Melissa and her mother and the rest of her family. May your healing hand be on all of them.
In Christ's precious name,

Love you my friend,

I know the feelings that come with hearing the "C" word. It is by far the ugliest word in the English language. However, with it comes a whole new way of trusting God. I'd leave you with one verse that has been very important in my journey through cancer: He will keep in perfect peace whose mind is steadfast on Him, because he trusts in Him. Isaiah 26:3 (with a little paraphrasing from me in it.)

Eph. 1:20-21...Jesus name is above EVERY name. It is!

I went through this journey with my mom. I was waffling will God heal her, will he not? How do I know? I had so much teaching that this may be from God. I didn't know to receive it or rebuke it. I was so confused. Every Dr. visit was an opportunity for anxiety.

Praying for healing one day, God showed me that I wasn't living in the present moment. I was living in the "what-ifs!" I wasn't just being thankful for TODAY. He also revealed to me that I didn't really know His will for her life or mine for that matter. I wasn't really sure if He was truly good all the time.

I set out on a pursuit to find out - to know Him know His deep and intimate love for me and my mom!

There is a verse is Is. that says "call evil good and good evil." Cancer is not good. We have to see it for what it is and put the right label on it. We have to know that God came to bring life and life to the full so that we can stand completely firm against it.

My prayer over all those months was Eph. 1:17-end - I pray that you for today, Melissa. If you don't know how awesome and wonderful He is - that He is for you and not against you- that He wants your mom well, I pray that He floods the eyes of your heart TODAY! I pray for quick revelation and a wonderful assurance how His great love for you both!

In Mt. 8:24-27...The disciples are in the boat with Jesus. They are afraid. Some Christians today would have told them to ride the wave out because Jesus was with them, but look at what Jesus did...He rebuked the storm. Immediately following, there was a perfect peace!! Perfect peace.

When we are not sure of God's fingerprints, its hard to know if we should fight or submit to the illness.

I encourage you this day to stand firm!!

Stand firm! Resist it! Resist the anxiety. Tell God all about it, but tell it to go too!!

I am sorry I went on and on - I could write a book about my journey!

Love in Jesus Christ!

My son shared this verse with his little sister this week and it immediately came to my thoughts when I read about your mom on Lysa's blog:

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9

I pray this truth for you and your family.

It truly is a "come to Jesus" time in your life, where all the pettiness of this world falls away and are sustained by the bread of life and the power of the Holy Spirit. Be sustained by the power of his "everlasting arms" which will lift you up and with the hope and joy that comes from Him alone (Romans 15:13). Pray your way through each day that your steps may be ordered by Him to accomplish the things you must and spend the time you must with your mom sharing about all of your life.

Continue to Love on her and know we are all praying for you to feel the peace and love of God on you and your family. Sit with her and write some of her stories she wants to share with you as a child. I sat with my mom, and as time got closer I put Praise Music on, my mom never really knew the Lord growing up and didn't believe what I believed. I sat with her, prayed and said Mom, you might as well get use to praise music, because your going to enter Heaven with praise... We watched home video's and laughed, cried.. She shared special moments I have and it has been since 1996 when my mom went to Heaven! You have an ANGELS JOB! Finish strong, blessings Karen

When I read your information both on Lysa's blog and your page, I was hit with similarities of when my mom had cancer. In November of 2000, my mother was diagnosed with a large malignant brain tumor. In February 2001, she entered eternity with our Lord. What I felt during that time of uncertainty was just that- wondering, hoping, all "planning" stops as you wait with that yuck feeling in your stomach. However, I was held up in prayer as was mom and my family. What I have learned - GOD IS FAITHFUL! and I've learned that I have yearned for others who know how I feel or what I'm going through. My mom felt the same way after my grandmother died as well. The Lord has provided all we need. Please know that your burden is on our hearts, and don't hesitate to contact me if you need to talk with someone who's
"been there". May you feel God's arms surround you and hold you really tight Today!

Melissa, I am so sorry that you and your precious mom are walking through this difficult trial. My mother and I walked that way a little over four years ago. She had ovarian cancer. I would encourage you to take some quiet each day to hear His voice. He will whisper encouragements to your heart that are SO life-giving and encouraging to your heart. Ones that you need most to hear at that moment. He will put you both on other's hearts and they will minister to you in very personal and special ways. He IS the great I AM and you will experience Him over and over in deeper ways than you ever have before. He is unfailingly faithful and His mercies are new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22-23) One of the Scriptures that ministered so much to me was Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." He will show you the way to take as you need to make hard decisions and encourage your heart and your precious momma's with His great and true promises. You are in our prayers. He will surprise you with how personal, loving and faithful He ways that only He would know would bless your heart SO deeply. It is a hard walk, but because you are walking with Him it is one of the sweetest you will ever take. He never wastes one thing that we are going through and will use it to build your character in ways you couldn't imagine. Look up to Him, lean into Him and obey all He shows you. My thoughts and prayers are with you sweet sister. Much love to you and your family....

Through our journey, we became closer that we ever were and I don't regret one moment with her. Within the months after her diagnosis, she came to know Christ and because of that, I am enternally thankful. People always would ask how I could be thankful for what she (and we) were going through... I just know that God's plan is much larger than anything I could ever conjour and knowing that He is in control is enough for me. I miss her, ever so deeply, everday, but I am grateful for the time we had and know that I will see her again someday. I will pray for your mother, you, and your family.
